The Master's Programme in Film and Media, with specialisation Documentary Processes is aimed at those who wish to specialise in and deepen their knowledge about documentary processes. The programme qualifies the student for third-cycle studies and consists of two years of full-time studies at second cycle level.

In the specialisation Documentary Processes, documentary makers, artists and journalists, for example, can deepen and develop their knowledge of the contemporary narrative of reality in both theory and practice. The emphasis lies in examining and deepening the student’s own artistic processes in a personal narrative and to independently reflect and formulate around their work in the form of documented questions and analyses. Documentary processes contribute to the development of ideas and practice in various aspects of artistic exploration and narrative.

Bengt Bok and Erik Gandini are responsible teachers for the specialisation.

The Master's Programme in Film and Media, with specialisation in Documentary Directing

The Master's Programme in Film and Media is a programme for going more indepth that is also research preparatory and has a common programme structure for all specialisations. In the programme’s theory courses, students are introduced to different perspectives on knowledge, theory, reflection and artistic research methods.

The programme also has methodology courses specific to the specialisation. As a master’s student in documentary processes, deepen your knowledge of processes and methods that are relevant to your artistic practice based on your insights from access to current artistic research. Alongside the continuous artistic development work, you will discuss artistic courage, working on ideas and ethical approaches, consider your own practice in relation to others, study different artistic methods and formulate your own. Critical reflection gives you the basis for intensification in your own practical work and in your ambition to develop the art. The studies are mostly conducted individually.

The insights and knowledge that you acquire in the specialisation-specific method courses are applied and later further explored in lab courses. You seek out your own tone, presence and expression. The programme uses experimentation and reflection as a method for the development of new thoughts in the work and the depiction of reality and ideas in documentary expression.

During the programme you will have many opportunities for interactions across traditional professional boundaries, for example through elective courses that are common to the university’s departments. Here, each student identifies his or her need for further knowledge.

The programme leads to gaining specialist knowledge that prepares for research and for being able to work on documentary processes.
