Performing Arts - Master

The Master´s programme consists primarily of three parts:

1. Thematic courses where you develop practical methods and approaches and gain a contextual and theoretical understanding of the field. Special attention will be given to discourses and practices relating to the bodily, conceptual, material and audience-related aspects of performing arts. You will also be able to opt for an elective course.

2. Method courses that prepare you for artistic research and introduce you to key methods and concepts within the field. The method courses bring together students from a range of MAs across SKH which allows for exchange of experience across different artistic disciplines’ approaches and methods.

3. An individual artistic project (the Degree project). Within these courses, you finalize, document and present the project with which you initially applied in a form which is appropriate to the investigation. In presenting the project you reflect and contextualize your practical investigation, and engage in a deepened, critical dialogue. 

The MA is taught both online and on campus in Stockholm (IRL) . You will be expected to attend 3-4 weeks of compulsory workshops on campus per semester. All other teaching will take place as weekly sessions online (Zoom). Individual work with preparation, tasks, reading etc. is included. The method courses and the elective course can be followed digitally or IRL at SKH.

General entry requirement for studies at the second cycle (a Bachelor's degree or the equivalent), and

Specific entry requirements:

• A bachelor in fine arts or the equivalent
• English 5 or the equivalent
• A grade of Pass in the qualification test showing artistic ability in performing arts*
  
  (*The evaluations of this will be based on the documentation of former artistic work that you hand in with your application.)

If you don’t fulfil the formal entry requirements for the programme you may apply for recognition of prior learning, in other words that the knowledge and competence you have acquired through other activities are assessed as the equivalent of the formal merits that are required. Submit your application for recognition of prior learning with your application for the programme.

You may also apply for an exemption/a waiver, that allows you to proceed to the selection process even though you don’t meet the general admission requirements. Submit your application for an exemption/a waiver together with your application.

Start your application early

Don’t delay in submitting your application! You may run into trouble if you wait until the last day and your internet connection happens to be down, or you find that your files are in the wrong format. You will not be able to apply once the last date for applications has passed. Keep in mind that your application has to be turned in by 23:59 (Swedish time).

You apply to the programme in two steps

1. Apply to the course via universityadmissions.se
   Last day for application: 16 January 2023. 
    
2. Submit your worksample via Varbi (accordning to instructions below). Last day to submit worksample to be part of the selection: 16 January 2023.
    
3. Submit supporting documentation of previous studies via universityadmissions.se
   Check that your documentation of previous studies is submitted at universityadmissions.se. If you can’t see your documents on “My pages”, then you need to submit them there: universityadmissions.se/My pages/Documents/Upload documents.

*Deadline for Diploma of Bachelor’s Degree and transcript of records for you who are currently studying the last term of your Bachelor’s Programme, is by the time for registration.

Instructions on how to submit your work samples* via Varbi
 

* Please read below which type of documentation and/or files that is required for the programme you have applied to.

When you have entered Varbi:
 

1. Register by stating your name and e-mail address.
    
2. Fill in your personal data.
    
3. Upload the required documents.

Before uploading your documents, they must be prepared as follows:
 

• You must scan your original documents. If the document is in colour, scan it in colour.
• All documents must be in PDF-format.
• Please name the document/file with content and your name for example: CV_ first name_ family name

Send in the following via Varbi:

1. Project Description
 

A project description where you outline and explain the artistic project that you wish to develop over the course of the two years of study and finalise in your “Degree project”. You can start from the following questions:

• What do you wish to explore with the project and why?
• In what context/contexts is the project based, and how does it relate to others who have been working with similar questions within contemporary theatre and performance?
• Choose one text/extract of a text that you find interesting in relation to your project. Describe the main arguments of the text and in which ways they are relevant to your project. (max.1p.)
• How do you expect the project to contribute to your current artistic practice?

The project description should be in English. Max. 4 A4, 2 000 words in total. Upload your description as a pdf-file.

2. Documentation of former artistic work
 

Please collect documentation of your choice for 2-3 examples of your artistic work in a pdf-file. For each project you need to list:

• Name of the project
• Short description of the project
• Your role in the work
• Documentation, for instance text, images, links to sound files, links to video material.

The descriptions of the artistic work and your role should be in English. The documentation (in e.g. the video) can be in the languages in which the artistic work was carried out. Uploaded as a pdf file.
 

Confirmation that you have submitted your work samples via Varbi

When you've submitted your work samples you will receive a confirmation to the e-mail address that you’ve stated.

If you don’t receive a confirmation e-mail, you should first check your spam filter. If the confirmation e-mail is not there, contact Varbi's technical support.

Applying for recognition of prior learning

If you do not meet the general requirements and/or specific requirements you can apply for recognition of prior learning. When you apply for recognition of prior learning you should upload:

• a letter explaining why you think that you will manage the studies even though you do not fulfil the general entry requirements and/or specific entry requirements.
• signed documents/certificates that confirm your merits/experiences that you refer to in your letter and CV. The documents you upload need to be signed and dated by the person/s that wrote them. We only accept documents on in English, Swedish, Danish or Norwegian. We do not accept e-mails as certificates.

If there are more eligible applicants than we can accept within the programme, a selection will be made. A first selection will be based on the material you have provided in your applicaiton. If you continue in the selection process you will be called to an interview.

If you are a Swedish citizen or a citizen of another EU or EEA country you are not required to pay application or tuition fees. Some other groups are also exempt from the requirement to pay application and study fees.

A few years ago Sweden introduced application and tuition fees for higher education. The level of the study fees depends on which course/programme they are for, and the level is set in order to cover the actual costs of the course/programme in question. SKH has some possibilities of offering scholarships that cover the whole study fee or that subsidise it.

If you are required to pay an application fee, the Swedish Council for Higher Education needs to receive your payment by the last date forpaying the tuition fee. The application fee is SEK 900. If you are required to pay the application fee and the Swedish Council for Higher Education has not received your payment by the last date for paying the tuition fee, they will not process your application.

The tuition fee for the Master's programme in Performaing Arts: 308 500 SEK per term and 1 234 000 SEK for the whole programme.

Scholarships to Cover the Tuition Fee

If you are obliged to pay a tuition fee you can apply for a scholarship which covers the tuition fee. The scholarship does not cover any private costs during your studies. Please note that you still need to pay an application fee (900 SEK). The application fee is non-refundable.
