New book about the role and position of theatre directors

Anja Susa, Professor in Theatre Directing at SKH, is one of the contributors to a new book about the role and position of theatre directors both historically as well as in relation to the contemporary theatre context.

The book Looking for Direction – Rethinking Theatre Directing Practices and Pedagogies in the 21st Century (2022) is one of the outcomes of the three year collaboration between seven directing programs from seven countries gathered around the Alexandria Nova Network (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Germany, Lithuania and Sweden).

Alexandria Nova is an Erasmus Strategic Partnership project which started in 2019 and ended recently.

The book aims at bringing up and problematizing the ongoing discussions about the role and position of theatre directors both historically as well as in relation to contemporary theatre context. Through a collection of articles written by international contributors mainly from the countries in the network, the book is trying to approach and re-contextualize the profession of theatre directing from various angles and perspectives some of which are quite personal reflections while the others have a more phenomenological take on the subject.

Looking for Direction is a useful contribution to rethinking the contemporary approach to theatre directing education as well as a precious referential frame for further conversations in the field of theatre and performing arts.

Anja Susa, Professor in Theatre Directing at SKH was a member of the editorial board of this book as well as one of the contributors with the article Directing Communitas – between Duty and Duty-Free Art.
