”Cinematic subjects and responsibility” by Marius Dybwad Brandrud

“Cinematic subjects and responsibility” is a PhD project by Marius Dybwad Brandrud. Marius is a PhD student in film and media.
In the doctoral research project “Cinematic subjects and responsibility” Marius Dybwad Brandrud investigates questions concerning representation, ethics and subjectivity in and through a documentary film process. The aim is to problematize the pretension to make an image of someone by cinematic means. The project will mostly be presented in cinematic form, made available via internet links.

Goal & purpose

The project concerns cinematic subjectivity behind and in front of the camera and screen. Departing from a critique of representation, the project is searching for a cinematic practice guided by non-unitary conceptions of subjectivity. The ambition is to investigate notions of responsibility in and through documentary processes of filmmaking.

Research questions

What is it to make an image of someone? How does a cinematic subject come into being?
What does responsibility in a documentary film process mean?

This is how the research will be carried out
